Laying Sod

Sod has the advantage of giving you an instant lawn. If you choose sod over seed for patching, match the sod to what you already have growing in your yard. Most nurseries and sod farms in your area sell sod that is commonly grown where you live.

Choose green, healthy sod to start with.

Use the sod right away--ideally the day you get it.

Prepare the soil by by loosening the top inch of soil with a rake.

Moisten the ground well without making it muddy.

.Press the sod firmly into place to get good sod-to-soil contact. Or, use a tamp to do this.

The edges of the sod pieces should fit tightly together but not overlap. When using several rolls of sod, be sure to lay it so the seams are staggered--like bricks in a wall.

Use an old knife or purchase a linoleum knife to cut the sod when you have to shape it to fit in an area.

Water the sod immediately with one inch or so until the soil beneath is moist but not soggy. Then water every day--twice a day if the weather is hot and dry--until the sod is well established.
