How to be Environmentally Conscious in Your Yard

Anyone can - and should - try to be a little more "green" in their yard as well as inside their home. There are several things you can do that are related to yard care that will help you be kind to the environment. Here are some tips:

  • Tune-up your lawn mower once a year. It only takes about 30 minutes and will extend the life of your equipment, make it start more easily, consume less gas and emit fewer emissions.

  • Be careful when fueling your mower and other equipment. Fuel spills, and evaporation of gasoline into the atmosphere, cause air pollution. Use a funnel and add gasoline slowly when fueling. Or, consider purchasing the only spill-proof fuel can, the Smart-Fill® Gas Can. It prevents over-filling, spills and gasoline evaporation.

  • Mow correctly. This is the most natural way to achieve a healthy, green lawn without adding lots of chemicals. Cut only one-third the length of the grass when you mow. This helps the grass grow thick with strong roots which can squeeze out weeds and fend off disease and pests.

  • Plant a tree. Trees absorb pollutants and release oxygen into the air. At the same time, a mature tree will help cool your home and increase the value of your property.

  • Conserve resources. You can conserve water by setting your sprinklers carefully to avoid run-off on sidewalks and driveways. Water early in the morning so the water is absorbed, rather than evaporated. Also, consider collecting rainwater in a rain barrel to water your flower beds and potted plants.
